Quantitative characterization of bamboo cortex structure based on X-ray microtomography

Bamboo is a natural fiber composite with layered structure. Millions of years evolution have endowed bamboo the most effective structure in nature. The ingenious microstructure provides excellent mechanical properties. culm composed cortex, middle layer, and pith ring. cortex refers to area starting from periphery wall vascular bundles. present study obtained two-dimensional (2D) cells by optical microscopy characterized three-dimensional (3D) through high-resolution X-ray microtomography (µCT). 2D anatomical parameters were measured verify reliability cortical cell classification 3D models. Based on analysis, classified into four layers: epidermis hypodermis transitional parenchyma layer. total volume reconstructed interest ?CT was 7.85 × 106 µm3, which pore 2.84 average about 1.54 103 µm3. Thus porosity 36.1%, relative density 0.639. Studies structure, especially digital characterization, will enrich database. Besides, revealed this can provide reference for optimizing material hierarchy biomimetic design.
